Amazons do not exist. Violent women, however, have been a constant feature throughout history. For several years now, Perrine Le Querrec and Mathieu Farcy, forming the PLY duo, have been compiling images, stories and archive material on the long-neglected issue of women’s violence and power. The result of an extensive project to collect visual material spanning different eras and cultures, as well as meetings and workshops held with women who embody this subject, this unique visual atlas of women’s violence is accompanied by poems and contemporary photographs inspired by these exchanges. Neither a manifesto nor a catalogue, this essay brings to life a pantheon of strong, rebellious, combative women – some of whom are criminals.
